Man's Best Friend

Kate and I are pet people. Growing up we almost always had a pet, I feel like it's in our blood. Currently I have a bunny and Kate has two parakeets. These pets have been fun to have for two single girls, but they just haven't been what we have wanted them to be. You want pets that add something to your life besides extra work. My bunny, Bernadette Rose (Bernie), has moments when she's adorable and cuddly but on the whole she spends lots of time eating carpet and scratching people. The birds... don't even get me started on the birds, we'll just say that they are loud and messy among other things.

This week I have been dog sitting for my parents while they are out of town. It has actually been super enjoyable and relaxing. The house is so quiet and peaceful and Rrrosa is THRILLED when I get home from work everyday and take her up the mountain for her daily hike. This week has been unexpectedly therapeutic for me, and I think it is because Rrrosa adds so much to the people around her. Who doesn't want someone to greet them ecstatically upon return? Who doesn't want company on a hike? She makes me want to leave work early so I can rush home and see her deliriously happy face. The return on the investment into her is incalculable, she adds so much and requires very little. I guess my point in this is, dogs are the best. People that don't like dogs are missing out on something really great...those idiots. Sometimes I think about how it's unfair that most animals have such shorts lives; is it worth it to invest so much care and love into something that is inevitably going to break your heart in 12 short years? The conclusion I've come to is YES, without a doubt they are. This little gray bearded pup has brought so much joy to this family, the wonderful times will far outweigh the bowls of tears filled at her passing.

Blogging...I'm not sure about you.

Here's the thing, blogging is weird right? Why would you want to publish random thoughts and experiences for all to see in the ginormous world of cyberspace? It's kind of like get a journal, right? This journal thought is recurring for me. Every time someone posts something on any social media outlet about potty training, kid fights, blowouts, you know all of those gross kid things that you should just write down in a private space to get it off your chest instead of embarrass yourself by publishing it publicly I think, 'this person needs a journal.' I have 10 completely finished journals starting at the ripe age of 7 so if you need tips on journaling I am your gal. I'm here to help people! Most of our family and friends blogs have expired, so why keep this up? This is the conclusion I've come to: I love to feel inspired and when I hit my regular blogs I come back feeling contented and inspired. What a gift it is to be able to inspire people, right? These two ladies are headed down an interesting road with some big changes ahead. I mean we're getting eerily close to the age of 30 it's time for some things to change, right?

So, cheers to a bright and inspired future. Bottoms up! Clink!

Remembering...

Do you ever smell a certain scent and suddenly you're thrown into a memory from years earlier? It seems to happen so fast and without any consent from my brain at all. One minute I'm walking, completely aware of my surroundings and the next minute my mind is somewhere else and I'm consumed by a memory. This doesn't happen very often but when it does it usually leaves me feeling nostalgic and a little sad.

The other morning I walked out my door and was instantly consumed by the smell of coffee. It smelled so good, I stopped walking for a minute and just enjoyed my deep breaths. I closed my eyes for just a moment and I was enveloped in a memory from years ago. I was at my grandparent's home in Washington D.C. sitting up to their bar with my feet dangling 3 feet from the floor. I was a tiny girl with wild bed head and was trying hard to rub the sleep from my eyes as I watched the 8" television on the counter. My grandma was working her magic in the kitchen and the smell of coffee was permeating throughout the entire house. As my memory started to fade and I opened my eyes I had a smile on my face. I would give anything to be back in that house sitting up to that bar, but in a world where age is constantly slashing away at us it's impossible. My grandpa is gone and my grandma is not who she once was. It's moments like these where perspective is everything, instead of being sad you have to choose to be grateful. I'm grateful for the memories and especially for the people who helped make the memories.

Thanks coffee drinking neighbors, I guess you can stay a little longer.

The Last 10 Years...

We haven't had a wedding in our family for almost 10 years. This is a little strange because our brothers are not much older than we are and girls typically get married before boys. Some might wonder what we've been up to for the past 10 years. Well...wonder no longer my friends:

Kate got her braces off.
2 high school diplomas.
2 Bachelors degrees.
Moved 15 times.
Been through 5 cars.
Kissed the same dude.
Kate pulled a tag team.
Got into karaoke.
Broke a collar bone.
Didn't go on missions (sorry Ma).
Thought about grad schools.
Got real jobs.
Started a T-shirt business.
Met a bunch of Jazz players.
Mastered trampolines and rollerblades.
Watched every TV series twice.
Drank 1 ton of soda.
Becca almost got married.
Kate bought 2 birds.
Becca bought a bunny and returned it.
Bought another bunny 6 months later.
Did 1,000 pogos.
Traveled a ton.
Becca got a mullet for college graduation.
Kate discovered she was more of a choreographer than a dancer.
Talked a student out of gauging his ears.
Had a pretty bad Razor scooter accident.
Won a tennis tournament in the 'best of the worst' category.
Spent a whole year trying to keep the Titanic from sinking.
Got really into fake tattoos.
Got really close to finding a cure for the common cold.
Got dominated by the ocean more than once.
Won a very coveted flag football intramural championship.
Built a canoe with our bare hands.
Ran a successful dog grooming business out of a van.
Ran the Ragnar twice.
Said we'd never run the Ragnar again, twice.
Kate broke into her own house and fit through the tiniest window a human could fit through.
Kate got really good at pretending she was deaf.
150 bad dates.
6 allergic reaction, one on a date (see above).
Created a new dog breed.
Became the world's greatest aunts.
Spent our life savings in J. Crew.
Participated in our own Olympic Games.
Won a bunch of gold medals.
Still don't understand Asians.
Decided red heads have souls too.

After writing this list we're pretty impressed with ourselves. I mean, we don't have kids but we have a bunch of pets. Cheers to the next 10 years, may they be as eventful and fulfilling as the last.
