So basically, I think I've cracked this riddle. The only problem is, after figuring it out, I think I hate this phrase even more. "Up North" is so vague. It could mean so many things. Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, or maybe even, I dunno... OH Canada! Wouldn't it be just as easy to say, "We're heading up to Farmington this weekend." Or "We're heading home to Kaysville this weekend." Who decided it was any easier to say, "We're heading up north this weekend." And then the other person is forced to say, "Oh, where up north?" And then you just end up telling them Kaysville or whatever. It's so stupid. In fact, it just prolongs a conversation with meaningless small-talk.
Now I realize, I may be targeting a few of our blog followers. Because they do, in fact, use this phrase. Well, my friends, I intend to do no harm. I just simply want to point out the fact that this phrase is stupid... and I hate it. K, love ya, see ya, bye.
Tenderly,
Kate
P.S. If you say, "Up Narth" then maybe we could talk.

Good thing you signed it "tenderly." You'll make fewer enemies that way.
I lived in Sandy. So when I say up North, I'm referring to Sandy. But when I refer to Farmington or Lagoon, It's Polar Bear land.
Holla! No one uses that term in Sugarhouse so....move here I think you'll be happier; everyone has a dog and drives a Suburu it's very posh.

What's polar bear land?
Love it.
Right after i read this post, i read another blog post from one of my friends... and the title to the post was Trip North. I laughed out loud.
{they live in St. George and went home to Farmington}
Dear Mal,
TYPICAL!
Polar Bears live extremely far North.
Haha you are DEFINITELY referring to us!! But let me explain...
When I first moved to St. George 3 years ago, I couldn't stand when people would say, "up north." The reason is because a lot of people who go to school here are from the Vegas area, small town Southern Utah places like Kanab, or even just Provo. But all the little cities UP NORTH all blend together, so when someone isn't familiar with Utah Geography, the term "up north" is more understandable. haha. Even though I used to hate the phrase, after living here for a while, it has unfortunately made its way into my vocabulary. I apologize if I have ever used such language in your presence! haha.
